Swinging with Heart

Each spring, more than 25 students and alumni from Bonner & Prendie gather at St. Pius X Parish in Broomall to support the Challenger League, a joyful whiffleball program for adults with intellectual disabilities. The league serves residents of the Communities of Don Guanella and Divine Providence, two Catholic Charities ministries that provide residential care, support services, and community connection for individuals with developmental challenges.

The league was co-founded more than 25 years ago by Jim Gula '72 alongside his classmate and friend Father Dennis Weber '72, a Servant of Charity and Director of Ministry and Mission for the Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities Division of Catholic Charities of Philadelphia. Their shared vision—to create an inclusive, joy-filled experience centered on dignity and friendship—took shape with the help of volunteers from across the community.

That spirit is alive and well today. Kelsey Gula Aitken, Jim's daughter, now leads the league as commissioner. "Once you start to become involved, it's easy to stay involved," she says.

For the Gula family, it's more than a tradition—it's a calling.

Bonner & Prendie students play an essential role as buddies, base coaches, and enthusiastic cheerleaders, forming bonds with players and helping ensure everyone has their moment to shine. MVP balls are awarded at each game, often celebrating courage, sportsmanship, or a breakthrough moment on the field. "By the end of the season, everyone will get a chance to be an MVP," Kelsey shares.

With decades of B&P support behind it—and a new generation stepping up—the Challenger League is a shining example of faith in action, where every swing and smile reflects the values at the heart of a Bonner & Prendie education.
